Prince William sends strong message to Welsh Rugby team ahead of major match

Prince William has sent a strong message to the Welsh Rugby team ahead of a major match.

Wales is playing against France in the first match of the Six Nations at the Stade de France tonight.

The Prince of Wales became the Welsh Rugby Union’s (WRU) patron in 2016, taking over the role from Queen Elizabeth II.

William, 42, posted his best wishes to the Welsh team ahead of their game with France this evening in the Six Nations.

He said: “Wishing @welshrugbyunion the very best of luck tonight against France, and throughout @sixnationsrugby! Amdani! 🏉 W”.

“Amdani bois” is a phrase used by the WRU on social media in reference to the Six Nations rugby tournament.

William has had a keen interest in the Welsh team since 2007, when he was made Vice Royal Patron of the WRU.

The WRU even created the Prince William Cup in 2007, where Wales and South Africa contested the trophy to celebrate 100 years of rugby rivalry between the nations.

Dennis Gethin, the late WRU president who died in 2023, previously said about William: “Since becoming vice patron in 2007, His Royal Highness has been a great ambassador, not only for the Welsh Rugby Union, but for young people and for sport generally.

“He makes a great difference to everyone he meets on his regular visits to Wales and to Principality Stadium, interacting with all kinds of individuals and groups including players past and present, volunteers, apprentices, veterans and staff.”

Queen Elizabeth II had been patron of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) since 1952.

The late Peter Baines, who was president of English rugby, said in 2016: “It has been a privilege and an honour to have the Queen as Patron of the RFU for over 60 years.

“She has been a fantastic supporter of the union and we thank her for that and her contribution to the game of rugby in England.”

Saturday will see Ireland take on England in the Six Nations.

Princess Kate, 43, is now the patron of the RFU and Rugby Football League in England.

She assumed these roles in 2022, taking over from her brother-in-law, Prince Harry.
