Prince William is a fan of ‘bonkers’ radio show, Scott Mills reveals

Prince William is a big fan of an often rude BBC Radio One show, Scott Mills has revealed.

In 2017, the Prince and Princess of Wales gave an unprecedented glimpse into their life behind closed doors in a candid radio interview on the Scott Mills show to promote a mental health campaign.

On air, the pair told listeners of their surprisingly normal life, discussing how they enjoy their favourite takeaway curry while lounging in comfortable clothes and watching Homeland or Game of Thrones at Kensington Palace.

However, it was during a ‘bonkers’ behind-the-scenes conversation that the heir to the British throne truly took Mills, 51, by surprise when he announced his love of Innuendo Bingo.

The often-silly radio segment saw the presenter play innuendos while Chris Stark and a celebrity guest had to hold back their laughter while having a mouth full of water.

Talking to The Times, Mills recalled: ‘I remember, off air, him [William] saying to me, ”Scott, I absolutely love Innuendo Bingo.” And Kate went, ”What’s Innuendo Bingo?” And he went, ”I’ll tell you later, darling.”

[I thought,] ”I wish you said that on air” and ”Oh my God, he really does listen.” And then he quoted something that I’d said just the week before.

‘I was like, ”OK, so I know that sometimes you get briefed, but that’s too much information. You would not know that unless you had actually listened”.’

Scott Mills (seen at Radio Two in the Park in September) has revealed that BBC Radio One's Innuendo Bingo segment boasted the Prince of Wales as a fan

Mills spoke to the newspaper following the launch of his Radio Two Breakfast Show today.

Ahead of his first show, Mills told the newspaper how William, who previously admitted to texting into the radio for shoutouts under a pseudonym, should be his first caller.

The BBC radio veteran, who took over the prestigious time slot from Zoe Ball, kicked off his first show with an emotional tribute to his predecessors and his childhood self, gushing he had been waiting for this day for years.

‘Here we go then, Monday the 27th of January 2025 and this is The Scott Mills Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2, and I can’t believe I am finally saying those words,’ the presenter began.

‘As a radio presenter and a radio fan all my life, I’m still finding it quite hard to process that this is happening, if I’m honest.

‘If I think too much about the previous occupiers of this show it becomes mind-blowing to me for a kid who wanted to be on the radio but wasn’t sure he had the self-confidence to be able to actually do it.’

Scott promised to make listeners smile and dance and ‘keep your spirits up on mornings when maybe you don’t feel so great’.

‘I’ve worked at the BBC for 25 years now on the radio,’ he continued. ‘A lot of you may well have grown up listening to me, I’m sure a lot of you will not have much idea about me at all.’

‘Either way, if you could make me part of your morning routine, it would honestly mean so much because, believe me, I’m going to give it absolutely everything I’ve got.’

It comes after Prince William revealed his very relatable parenting struggle when it comes to his three children on school days.

During a visit to Liverpool last Thursday, the royal, 42, met a group of primary school children at Tiber’s Young People’s Steering Group in Toxeth.

After taking part in a football match with the students from English Martyrs Catholic Primary School and Princes Primary School, William asked the children about their school day.

The future King – who was filmed rubbing his hands together to stay warm – asked: ‘Did you have a good day at school?’

Following their muted response, Prince William then asked a more pointed question.

In an attempt to get more details out of the children, the royal added: ‘Learnt anything new today?’

Off camera, one of the school children replied: ‘Not really.’

Bursting into laughter, Prince William then confessed he also struggles to get Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, nine, and Prince Louis, six, to talk about their school days.

He continued: ‘I love it. I ask my children this everyday and they always say nothing. Absolutely nothing!’

Later on, Prince William was handed three envelopes by the students, which were for Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

The letters – which contained a £10 note – outlined the ‘Smile Challenge’ they are currently taking part in, which aims to make beam without giving them the money.

After accepting the envelopes, Prince William gushed: ‘This one will be a good one for Louis, he needs a good challenge.

‘That’s very kind of you, thank you very much.’

Earlier in the day, Prince William had visited Cycle of Life, non-profit cycling organisation, to highlight community initiatives for young people.

Dressed in a smart bottle green overshirt, brown jumper, and blue shirt, the heir to the throne was quick to reflect on his own days out with his children.

As he tested the brakes on the bike he worked on, he said he believed the correct way to stop was to squeeze both brakes at the same time – putting safety first.

However, he said his children like to do things differently, and always skid past him on family bike rides.

He said: ‘My children quite like pulling just the back brake and sliding along. Usually the back wheel will come past you. There is a technique.’

Prince William visited the area – which is just 30 miles from Southport – on the same day child killer Axel Rudakubana was sentenced last week.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have previously shown strong support with the community and made a poignant visit to Southport last October where they met with people who had been impacted by the horrific events of July.

Rudakubana was sentenced to a minimum term of 52 years at Liverpool Crown Court after admitting to the murders of three young girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class last year.

As well as privately meeting the families of the three little girls who were murdered, the couple spoke to emergency service personnel who helped at the scene of the tragedy last July.
