King Charles has held a private meeting with his daughter-in-law Kate Middleton as the palace begins planning for Prince William’s future accession to the throne, the New York Post reports.
The 76-year-old king has taken a fresh look after a difficult year, including being diagnosed with cancer in February.
In March, Middleton also revealed her cancer diagnosis, drawing attention because her battle with her health has been so similar to the king’s.
The couple are said to have grown closer amid their health challenges, according to the outlet. A source told Radar Online, “She and Charles have had a private discussion about her taking on the role sooner than expected.”
The source added, “Their relationship is incredibly strong, as they have been a huge source of encouragement to each other throughout their parallel battles with cancer.”
The insider added: “This is also why Charles has been working so hard to give her the space she needs to recover in preparation for the inevitable moment when he and Camilla hand over power.”
Palace officials are focused on ensuring “Kate and William have a smooth transition of power,” the source said.
The report comes amid growing speculation that the Prince and Princess of Wales have been preparing for William’s accession to the throne.
Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith previously told People : “While the king continues to carry out his duties with characteristic determination, his cancer treatment has forced him to acknowledge certain limitations.”
Comment“As a result, William has taken on more responsibility and both he and Kate have been preparing for their future roles earlier than originally planned.”
