King Charles reportedly craves to have his own shining moment in the spotlight, since he’s starting to feel like he’s always going to be coming in second to Prince William, despite literally being the head that wears the crown. Do I smell another royal drama brewing?
This year has not being the best for Prince William in terms of publicity, and he’s spent most of it in a laid-back approach with the media. You can bet that it hasn’t been easy for him, what with his wife and father’s cancer diagnosis and joint chemotherapy treatments.
However, as his wife continues to show remarkable recovery, William is starting to increase the amount of public-facing duties he can attend to.
The first sign that the old Wills was coming back was when he treated his eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, to a Taylor Swift concert in London. It was a beautiful night for the family, who got to take pictures with the global singer and her boo, Travis Kelce.
When it comes to making headlines, it’s more likely that William will get the top spot over his father King Charles than the other way around, and according to royal historian Dr. Tessa Dunlop, this is not lost on the elderly monarch.
“It must be tough for Charles, a man who waited over 70 years for the big gig, to play second fiddle to his son,” Dunlop told The Mirror, before going to point out that “time and again recently, William has grabbed the headlines” over his father.
Referencing the Prince of Wales’ recent visit to the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards—where he donned military gear and fired a gun— and his Christmas lunch at homelessness charity The Passage, she noted that “all eyes are always on William and the Waleses.”
She also touched on William and Charles’ differing personalities, saying, “Unlike his father, King Charles, long associated with a green agenda, William’s brand neatly avoids any one particular passion-project. These days, the Prince of Wales effortlessly blends his mother’s charisma with a careful study of the late Queen’s canny constitutional rule.”
