Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton seemed to be developing a close friendship when they first met.
However, reports quickly suggested there was tension between the two women. One incident involved the Duchess of Sussex asking to borrow lip gloss from Kate which didn’t go down well and an argument between the two that ended in tears.
A royal expert has now said Meghan and Kate shared a “cold” relationship, especially after Prince Harry and Meghan stepped down from the royal family. Richard Fitzwilliams admitted, “The relationship between Meghan and Catherine was cold or cool, putting it mildly.”
Fitzwilliams suggested Meghan and Kate’s relationship started to sour after a year. He continued, “Meghan only lasted about a year and a half as a senior working royal before they indicated that they were unhappy.”
Fitzwilliams hinted that Harry found a sort of liberation through Meghan from his already unsatisfactory royal life. In early 2020, the world was stunned by the Sussexes’ decision to step down from their senior royal roles and relocate to the US.
Offering insights into Meghan’s prior fame as an actress, Fitzwilliams remarked to The Express, “The fact she was so used to the red carpet and the audience it was thought she and Harry would be perfect for the role. She was, of course, deeply unhappy.”
Discussing the couple’s well-publicized royal departure, he elaborated, “It all went very wrong, precisely why is still a matter for debate.” He also warned against drawing definitive conclusions, “I wouldn’t put a specific reason behind it because Harry was unhappy, and I think Meghan provided the way out in a sense.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made their home in Montecito, California, with their two children – Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Recently, Harry expressed his satisfaction with his life in America during the New York Times DealBook Summit.
Harry revealed, “I very much enjoy living here and bringing up my kids here.” He also mentioned his late mother, Princess Diana, saying it was “as though it’s the life my mom wanted” for him. He further noted that they enjoy a level of privacy in the US and can engage in activities that “undoubtedly wouldn’t be able to do in the UK” due to security concerns.
