Royal fashion disaster avoided. Prince William once steered Kate Middleton away from wearing an outfit he considered “inappropriate” for a member of the British royal family with a joke. Ahead, what zinger the Prince of Wales, 42, had for his wife. Plus, how the Princess of Wales, 43, responded. Hint: The whole thing ended in laughter.
William joked Kate Middleton’s outfit had a ‘superglue’ element
Speaking to The Times of London, an advisor of William’s revealed the future king had to speak up to keep Kate from wearing an “inappropriate” royal outfit. How? With a joke. It happened back when Kate was still learning about royal fashion.
“Before Kate realised [sic] that as a senior royal you have to dress carefully, having taken advice, she once bought an outfit that William considered inappropriate,” the advisor recalled.
So what did William say? The royal father of three didn’t exactly mince words. “He told Kate she looked as if she’d just run through a charity shop covered in superglue.” Ouch.
Kate laughed off Prince William’s joke about her outfit

As for how Kate reacted to William’s joke the future queen took it in stride, according to the insider. “Everyone thought this was very funny,” they said, “including, to her credit, Kate.”
Kate’s reaction to the joke isn’t all that surprising. Her sense of humor is something even William and Prince Harry have touched on before. “She’s got a really naughty sense of humor, which really helps me because I’ve got a really dirty sense of humor,” William said of Kate in their 2010 engagement interview.
Meanwhile, the Duke of Sussex, 40, recalled that he “liked seeing Kate laugh” in his 2022 Spare memoir (via Express). “Better yet, I liked making her laugh. And I was quite good at it. My transparently silly side connected with her heavily disguised silly side.”
Kate is one of the best-dressed royals

While Kate may have narrowly sidestepped an “inappropriate” outfit that doesn’t mean she’s not a pro when it comes to royal dressing. Not only is her love of clothes well-documented (she briefly worked in fashion before joining the royal family and even Harry recalled his sister-in-law’s love of fashion in his memoir) but Kate’s made numerous best-dressed lists over the years.
The royal mother of three has been named Britain’s best-dressed person by Tatler. She’s also topped best-dressed lists for other publications such as Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair.
Kate even posed for the cover of British Vogue in 2016. More recently, longtime Vogue editor-in-chief dismissed a rumor the future queen had been invited to appear on 2025 global covers for the storied fashion magazine.
So, despite coming close to wearing an “inappropriate” outfit, Kate has honed in on royal fashion after nearly 15 years as a British royal.
