Prince William takes up job he hates to impress Kate on her birthday

Princess Kate is celebrating her 43rd birthday on Thursday, and Prince William will work hard to ensure he pulls out all the stops for her special day.

The celebrations this year will be all the more meaningful; this time last year, Kate was admitted into hospital for abdominal surgery, only to be diagnosed with cancer and forced to undergo gruelling chemotherapy treatment, which she successfully completed in September 2024.

As such, her doting husband will want to “spoil Kate rotten” – even if that means taking on a job he normally dislikes. “Even though he says he’s not a very good cook, Catherine did tell Mary Berry that he’s quite good at breakfasts so maybe a tray – complete with a rose – will arrive early for her,” royal expert Jennie Bond told OK! magazine.

The former BBC correspondent further discussed the gifts that William might present to his wife to mark the occasion. She said: “For her husband and children, this will be an excuse to spoil her rotten and, even though it falls on a school day, I’m sure that’s exactly what they’ll do.

“I imagine they will shower her with gifts – perhaps some pampering products like luxurious bath oils and scented candles. Maybe William will buy her some silk pyjamas or cashmere jumpers – things that are soft on skin [after] treatment.”

Jennie noted: “This birthday is going to be memorable in so many ways – it will mark the start of a new and hopefully happier year and the end of one that has been brutal for the whole family.”

Prince William previously admitted that he isn’t a pro in the kitchen. “Catherine is definitely the one who cooks, not me,” he shared during the couple’s appearance on A Very Berry Christmas back in 2019.

At one point during the festive program, British baking icon Mary Berry asked Kate: “Does William ever cook for you?”

“He sometimes does actually. He’s very good at breakfast. University days, he used to cook all sorts of meals. I think that’s when he was trying to impress me, Mary. Things like bolognese sauce and things like that,” she said.

The Princess also spoke about Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis’s love of Italian cuisine. When asked by Mary, “Do you do a bit of cooking with your children?” Kate responded: “Yes, I really enjoy it. Again, for them to be creative, for them to try and be as independent as possible with it. Actually one of the last things we cooked, together, was your pizza dough. We made pizzas with your pizza dough recipe…They absolutely loved it.”

Kate also shared that they grow their own vegetables at their family home, and that her youngest “Louis absolutely loves beetroot”.
