Prince William was ‘banned from his video shop’ as university student

Prince William was allegedly banned from his local rental video store during his time as a university student because he handed back films too late.

The future monarch was barred from a video shop local to his former stomping grounds of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland, for not paying his fines.

An ex-shop assistant, only known as Zoe, revealed the geography student often frequented the store in search of entertaining flicks.

But during an age well before the streaming era – the Prince of Wales would ‘regularly’ return films late resulting in fines, The Sun reports.

The assistant told the publication: ‘We used to serve Prince William quite regularly in the video shop in St Andrews before everything went digital.

‘His DVDs were always late and his bodyguards would never want to pay the fines.

‘We would end up, because it was just part of it, we had to ban Prince William until he paid up, which he always did in the end. He’s very nice.’

Zoe also divulged the royal’s favourite film at the time was raunchy comedy Boat Trip which features Swedish Playboy model Victoria Silvestedt who plays ‘Inga’.

Although the former shop clerk dubbed the movie, which also stars Cuba Gooding Jr, as ‘terrible’, she said William reportedly rented the movie at least ‘a couple of times’.

The 2002 comedy which features the likes of Vivica A. Fox, Horatio Sanz and Roselyn Sánchez, tells of two friends who mistakenly end up on a gay cruise.

It is not known if Princess Kate also watched the heir’s favourite film whilst they studied at the Scottish university together from 2001 until 2005.

Prince William and Kate met in 2001 during their first week as Psychology students at the Scottish university – before she later switched to an Art History degree.

Their relationship began as a friendship and then grew into something more in 2002, after the duo moved in together alongside two other friends in second year.

In 2023, it was previously revealed that Prince William was a ‘huge fan’ of the Lord of the Rings.

In February of that year both the Prince and Princess of Wales were invited to an exclusive late-night tour of The Rings of Power studios in Buttersteep Rise, Ascot.

The royal couple also brought their children – a then-nine-year-old Prince George and Princess Charlotte, who was seven at the tim – to meet the show’s cast.

'We would end up, because it was just part of it, we had to ban Prince William until he paid up, which he always did in the end. He's very nice,' Zoe said

Actor Martin Freeman, who played Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit films, divulged the future monarch was a huge fan of the fantasy series and JRR Tolkien.

Freeman said: ‘He knew all the facts about Middle Earth.’

A source told The Sun: ‘William is a huge fan of the films so jumped at the chance [to visit the studios].

‘They were introduced to the major cast members and were shown around the set.’

‘It was all hugely exciting for George and Charlotte who loved looking at the props and how everything was laid out.

‘Louis stayed at home as it was a bit late in the evening for him. They were accompanied by security and it was very low-key. It was a huge honour for the cast too.’
