‘Real Housewives of New York’ fans slam Brynn Whitfield for calling Ubah Hassan an ‘angry black woman’

Brynn Whitfield is receiving backlash for calling her “Real Housewives of New York” co-star Ubah Hassan “an angry black woman” during last week’s episode.

Whitfield, 38, confirmed she made the comment during an off-camera conversation to Hassan, specifically saying, “I don’t want you to come off like this, as an angry black woman.”

She was concerned that if Hassan appeared to represent herself that way, her investment banker beau, Oliver Dachsel, would not want to marry her.

“I told her, I was like, ‘I want you to marry Oliver. I want Oliver to want to marry you,’” Whitfield said.

Each recalled their side of the story to Bravo cameras after they got into a heated debate during the girls’ trip to the Hamptons.

Whitfield addressed the situation on her Instagram Story Friday and insisted her comments about Hassan, 41, and interactions with her “were conveyed without context.”

“To see my intentions twisted and my words misrepresented, flat out scares me,” she noted.

She went on to claim the episode was edited to make it appear she brought up the “angry black woman” stereotype on her own, which she said was not the case.

“The truth is, ‘angry Black woman’ was brought up by Ubah last year in Anguilla,” the Bravolebrity claimed.

“In a highly charged 4th wall moment in Anguilla, after the incident with Erin’s sunglasses, Ubah spoke directly into the camera: ‘Don’t you dare edit me to look like an angry Black woman.’”

“After Anguilla, Ubah and I frequently discussed this harmful stereotype at length,” she continued. “As a biracial woman, I will never know what it’s like to fully walk in Ubah’s shoes.”

“During that off-camera night in the Hamptons, we both spoke candidly about our fears and triggers— as we always had,” Whitfield went on, referring to last week’s episode.

“We hugged, said we loved each other and promised to do everything in our power to help one another.”

Whitfield said she was unsure what “shifted after that touching moment” to cause such upset, but apologized for any hurt she caused.

“I am deeply sorry if I overstepped that night in the Hamptons,” she added. “I am beyond sorry as this was never my intention.”

Whitfield shared the lengthy statement after numerous fans took to social media to address her “unbearable” behavior.

“Bryn is starting to rub me the wrong way, especially saying for ubah to not be an angry black woman cuz she wants ubah (white) boyfriend to marry her,” one fan noted.

“Saying that her man is not going to marry her is diabolical and projection at its finest,” one fan wrote. Danielle Levitt/Bravo

“Ubah was in fact acting aggressive but saying that her man is not going to marry her is diabolical and projection at its finest. Brynn has daddy issues!” another penned.

“Ubah should have dragged her ass,” another boldly suggested. “Brynn have several seats and choose your words correctly.”

“And what is her business with Ubahs relationship, it giving wierd behaviour.”

“Brynn being a biracial woman police-ing Ubah’s ‘blackness’ just shows how uncomfortable she is with her African American side,” another disturbed viewer commented.

A fifth fan questioned, “How did she go from likable to last season to so dreadful this season?”

“To pick the only black girl in the group & say she shouldn’t partake in usual housewife activities bc her white boyfriend won’t find her attractive, is so preposterously racist that I’m shocked she said that with a straight face,” another dumbfounded viewer wrote.

Page Six has reached out to representatives for both Whitfield and Hassan, as well at Bravo, for comment.
