The meaning behind Kate Middleton’s Holocaust Remembrance Day necklace

Kate Middleton loves jewelry with significant meaning.

On Monday, the Princess of Wales attended a Holocaust Memorial Day service in London, where she debuted a special five-strand faux pearl necklace ($341).

Sourced from vintage jeweler Susan Caplan, the piece dates from the eighties and includes pearls in various sizes, along with an embellished Swarovski crystal clasp.

Susan Caplan spoke about the symbolic necklace on her Instagram, with a photo of Middleton wearing it at the ceremony, which commemorated the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau during World War II.

“Today marks 80 years since the Holocaust, and as a Jewish owned brand we are honoured that the Princess of Wales chose to wear our necklace for today’s memorial to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day,” she captioned the post.

Fans of the company and Middleton praised the choice in the comment section, writing, “Congratulations, this is so special ” and “So proud and so incredibly emotional seeing this.”

Middleton, 43, paired the necklace with her Bahrain pearl drop earrings, which were passed down from Queen Elizabeth II.

Pearls have long been a symbol of mourning for the royal family since the reign of Queen Victoria, who wore the look to commemorate her husband, Prince Albert, after his death in 1861.

Elsewhere in her all-black outfit, the royal went with a simple Catherine Walker coat, Roland Mouret trousers ($960 $655), Russell & Bromley pumps and a Chanel mini flap bag.

At the candlelight service, Middleton and her husband, Prince William, 42, met with Holocaust survivors and the princess even reunited with a couple that she previously photographed in 2020.

Earlier this month, the princess revealed that she’s in remission from cancer four months after finishing treatment.

Middleton shared the good news on Instagram, captioning a photo of herself on a recent hospital visit where she was treated, “I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to The Royal Marsden for looking after me so well during the past year.”
